Luck of the Draw

“He was a horse whose quality, an admirer would write, ‘was mostly in his heart, and Tom Smith had been the first to recognize it.’ He spoke to the horse as he was led away. ‘I’ll see you again.’”

—Laura Hillenbrand, from Seabiscuit: An American Legend

"We'd always try if there is any shot for him to make it. We have, over in our field right now, horses who are useless, who didn't do as much as he did. But they work for you, and you have a responsibility to take care of them. They've given us so much. There was never a doubt that we'd do all we could for him.”

—Gretchen Jackson on her horse, Barbaro (2003-2007), from The Baltimore Sun

“I hope you will fall into good hands, but a horse never knows who may buy him…it is all a chance for us; but still I say, do your best wherever it is, and keep up your good name.”

—Anna Sewell, from Black Beauty

RELEASED IN JULY 2008: Luck of the Draw is the story of Lucky, one of the slowest racehorses the world has ever known. Even though Lucky gives racing his all, he never manages to win a race, and soon finds himself working as a jumper and dressage horse. No matter how hard he tries, Lucky seems to fail at all disciplines.

Despite his lack of success, Lucky remains upbeat and hopeful. He is determined to find his life’s purpose, and eventually learns that succeeding in life doesn’t always involve winning trophies and ribbons.

Luck of the Draw is Diana's third novel, which she began writing at age 17.

Excerpt from Luck of the Draw:
2008 Copyright by Diana Tuorto

"When I was a foal, my mother would sometimes ask me to jump a tree stump in the field. She said it would help me to develop agility for racing. I could never clear the stump. I would charge at it and either trip or jump and knock my back legs. Even with this fresh in my mind, I wanted to put my heart into something and succeed."
